I watched a video a little while ago that is not even worth mentioning outside of the total feeling of disappointment that I felt watching it. I'm truly becoming disenchanted by the response that many people within the African-American community have had regarding the Trayvon Martin verdict. My reason for wearing a hoodie over my head is to get all of your attention to alert you all that this is not the dream that I was talking about when I delivered my I Have A Dream speech.
Violence is not overcome by stomping it out with more violence. Violence is overcome through education. We need to educate our black children not to stand on street corners into the early morning hours. We need to educate our black children to stop wearing their pants off their behinds. We need to educate our black children to stop getting involved in gang life. We need to educate our black children to stop shooting and killing each other. Most important of all, we need to educate our black children to place a high value on their own lives. This is especially true if we believe that nobody else will.
